The mouth is the gateway to the entire body. Oral disease is the number one medical issue affecting the world including the United States. The reciprocal relationship between the mouth and overall physical well-being continues to unfold and cannot be understated.

Clinical research reveals that oral disease may lead to cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, pancreatic cancer, pre-term low birth weight babies, osteoporosis particularly in females, chronic obstructive respiratory disease, tongue cancer particularly in males, a precipitating co-factor relationship in Alzheimer's disease and other systemic problems showing a potential relationship with oral disease. Attacking oral disease is multi factorial yet uncomplicated, requiring periodic dental re-care visits, appropriate home care and proper nutrition to upholster oral as well as systemic health. The dentist must be aware of the systemic problems that may be affecting the mouth and take appropriate measures to mitigate the cause and affect relationship. Blood tests are frequently requested to analyze how oral disease is affecting overall health as well as determining what systemic problems may be affecting the mouth. As I tongue in cheek tell patients, your mouth may kill you in one of three ways:

1. What you say to others

2. What you eat or don't eat

3. What you don't do to take care of your mouth.

So the solution may lie in if you don't have something nice to say don't say it, eat good food with proper supplementation, maintain proper oral hygiene and you can avoid a number of factors that could cause an early demise.
